Tijuana enjoys notoriety among Americans and other nationals for its red-light district Zona Norte (referred to as La Coahuila as it is one of the main streets) which boasts a large selection of clubs and bars that are actually whorehouses. Tijuana's prostitutes have drawn tourists since the turn of the century, in the red-light district "La Coahuila" a few square blocks near the main tourist drag, Avenida Revolucion. About 1,200 prostitutes from all over Mexico work in Zona Norte, making it a sex tourist destination that ranks in popularity with Amsterdam and Bangkok.

There are many brothels in Zona Norte, many of them modeled on strip bars, like Adelita, Hong Kong and Chicago bars. In La Coahuila, some bars have beautiful girls, and some very ordinary girls, but if sex is what you want, you can definately find it here! In addition to established brothels, there are prostitutes who work outside on the "callejones" or alleys and are referred to as paraditas, Spanish for "the standing girls". Paraditas have been regarded as part of Tijuana's cultural history, and attempts to force the prostitutes off the streets to curb such public advertising have proven unpopular and unsuccessful. It's legal to take photos in the zona. The street girls don't like it and will make up lies that it's against the law. The cops prey on gullible and scared sex tourists and will make up phony laws prohibiting the photos for a bribe. In the room some girls will let you take pictures, and will charge extra, others won't let you take them at all. That being said, if you're shrewd, sneaky and utilize stealth techniques, you can take some remarkable photos of hookers and prostitutes, trolling for customers on the streets of Tijuana. You CAN take photos of street girls, and anybody else in Zona Norte IF you obtain their permission. Prostitutes and hookers WILL charge you to take their photos; that's the way they earn their living, which is perfectly legal in Tijuana.

For those who are not familiar with this area, it is not the whole city but maybe a 4 square block area. I have been there and talked to several of the girls. Most come to Tijuana from small towns seeking work and hopefullly get into America since it is in San Diego's back yard. Immigration, what an interesting dilemma.

Great covert filming, really is amazing to see all those girls lined up everywhere. I do think that it needs interviews with local workers/some of the girls themsleves/family members etc. or how exactly it is [self] regulated etc. or at least a little narration about some of the details to make an actual constructed film. Some great footage though.

I find this hidden video pretty intriguing and shot in an unpretencious way. No melodramatic narratives or unneccesary captions here, just a vision on what is going on in the street. Makes a change from the overdose of documentaries about war that everyone seems to be making. Perhaps we can have a sequel of what the same streets look like at 10pm.

You people with all your comments are insane. It's an undercover, raw documentary. There is no need for subtitles, commentary, interviews, etc. It is perfect for what it was intended to be. This is not a Francis Ford Coppola project. You can be arrested for shooting this type of video. That's why the videographer had to conceal his camera. He's letting you in. You are getting a dog's eye view of the Zona Norta, La Coahuila. The guy who really shot and produced this video deserves an award for undercover videography.

Thanks for your comments and construcitve criticism. I've tried doing a night scene video and I don't yet have command of my camera to get good images. You see, the streetwalkers stand in front of the businesses, not on the street side of the sidewalk. at night, the business lights are on full blast and all I get are shadow faces. I really want to show how young, sad, bored and desperate these girls are and it just doesn't show with the camera (or my expertise). For you guys to get the message, I need to show the faces. Tijuana is cracking down on prostitutes by requiring them to pass monthly exams to detect sexually transmitted diseases, part of new standards aimed at protecting them and their clients and putting unsafe brothels out of business.

Sex workers in the brothels and on the streets are required to have permits and must undergo monthly health checkups to ensure that they’re not giving out more than they’re taking in so to speak. The individual brothels themselves are also subject to a number of legal regulations ensuring cleanliness and other miscellaneous criteria. From what I understand, the majority of the prostitutes in the area are of Mexican descent, but there are a chosen few American girls who come to the area to legally practice their chosen profession, since, for some reason, prostitution is still frowned on in the US.

The regulations amount to an open, official acknowledgment of what has long been a fact of life in this Mexican border city. Before, the few standards that existed were unwritten, which authorities say made them difficult to enforce. They included requiring prostitutes to submit to regular health exams, including three AIDS tests a year.

Prostitutes at a government-run health clinic this week didn't seem too concerned about the change. They said they get checkups anyway, to ensure they are healthy.

"It's a form of insurance," said Claudia, 18, who arrived from the Gulf Coast state of Veracruz four days earlier and plans to work in the street. Back home, she was earning $25 a week in a clothing factory. Here, she will earn $20 from each man she has sex with.

Here are my street girl findings from the last time I went to TJ. I thought there were a lot of very pretty chicas out this time. There were a few in the alley, on the Hong Kong side that could compare with the top chicas at HK or AB. There were a couple of coffee skinned chicas with bare bellies on that side of the alley towards the AB end that were very tempting.
